Presidential Proclamation — Religious Freedom Day
“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, Sikhs and non-believers…”
Thank you, Mr. President: indeed we are. And we were founded as a nation of plurality and diversity, on a constitution that offered as much opportunity for debate and differences of opinion at the time of its charter as it does today.
That’s why we have separation of church and state, and why I am a board member of Americans United. Separation of Church and State is all about religious freedom, including the freedom to have no religion at all, the freedom to believe in and act in accordance to your religious beliefs (as long as they don’t infringe on the beliefs of others) and the knowledge that my government must not make anyone feel marginalized, ostracized, less protected or less… well, American, because of their religious beliefs (or lack thereof).
