The IRS and non-religious non-profits

December 21, 2012

An interesting tax issue: non-profit organizations are required to demonstrate how they will benefit the public.

Unless they are religious, in which case they get an immediate pass, and save $850.

Sound fair?  How about when I remind you of the tax-exempt status of the Westboro Church?  Can you say that they provide a meaningful public benefit in exchange for their tax-exempt status?

As a tax-exempt group ourselves, we will be watching this one closely.
